Differences on Education between Chinese and American Culture
Every country has her distinct culture, so there are many differences between Chinese and American culture. In this paper, I want to describe the major differences on Education between Chinese and American culture.
In American, many children begin their school education at the age of six. Most state school offer 12 years of training, and children usually graduate from high school at the age of 18.Five-year-old children have one year of preschool training in many schools. And parents usually send their young children to Nursery School or Kindergarten because their busy lifestyle. The academic year lasts nine months, from September to June, with winter and spring vacations. Classes are held fives days a week, from Monday till Friday.
While in China, most children begin their school education at the age of 7 or 8.There are 9 years of compulsory education from 5 years of elementary school to 4 years of junior high school. Then come to 3 years of senior high school. So there are 12 yeas in total as well. Classes are held 5 days a week in elementary school, 6 days a week in junior high school, and 7 days a week in senior high school. That is, Chinese students study much more time than American students.
When a pupil has his elementary school education, he goes high school automatically. There is no entrance exam. However, Chinese student need to pass an examination if they want to go to senior high school. If they failed in the exam, they may go to vocational schools for specific occupations.
In elementary schools, courses for children are colorful, including reading, writing and social courses such as history, science and so on. They can also learn cooking and manual skills such as carpentry and sewing. Contrast with American students, Chinese student often feel bored with their courses which are usually more difficult and abstract. The books and courses are almost the same in different provinces because the content of the examination is formulated by the Ministry of Education. While American schools can decide what to be taught and to be examined.
Schools from elementary school to colleges offer a range of extracurricular activities that can enhance the overall experience of students. Most schools feature intercollegiate athletic programs in various sports such as football, tennis, track and ice hockey for both male and female students. In schools of china, we spend much less time on extracurricular activities and there are fewer kinds of activities. There always so much homework needed to be done that we always have to have classes. That is because the large population of China made the burden of entering a higher school big.
In American, although admission requirements vary from one institution to another, most share a few common features. Nearly all colleges require students to submit transcripts of grades from high school and scores on standardized tests. They also generally require a completed application form, written essays that reflect accomplishments and goals, and letters of recommendation from teachers who are familiar with the applicant’s academic background. In addition, some colleges require an interview with college officials, either on campus or by telephone. However, all the students who want an education and are qualified would have the opportunity to continue their education at public institutions.
It seems troublesome. However, contrasting with Chinese students, American students are more luckily. In China, every student needing to study hard in order to get a good mark in the college entrance examination. The higher the mark is, the better the college you can be admitted. Though the college entrance examination not so much difficult itself, the large population made it more difficult. If you failed in it, you can choose a college not so good or come back to Grade three in high school to take part in the college entrance examination again if you really want to enter a famous university. But there are still some students who cannot continue their further education.
The most notable characteristic of the American education system is the large number of people it serves. So there are public schools that you don’t need to pay the tuition. That is because the schools can receive budget funds from the government which comes from the state country or city property taxes. In China, schools are usually public schools. The difference between American and Chinese public schools is the tuition. In China, you always need to pay your tuition. The tuition in elementary school and senior high school is less than in junior high school because the former are compulsory education so that the government shares part of the tuition.
In American, there are also many private schools that different from China. Private schools in the United States are relatively free from governmental regulation. Most private schools have relatively high expectations for academic achievement. There are many famous private schools like Harvard University. Those are very different in China. The private schools in China usually are vocational schools that are worse than public schools and you need to pay high tuition. So in China, we usually go to public schools if we want to learn more not like the American students can choose which kind of schools to go.
Those differences are what I know from what I have learned in this semester. Culture is something that is complex and profound so there must be many that I don’t know. I would like to learn more about the American culture in the future
