随着这种思想逐渐传播，加上移民国家必然受到水手思想影响，更加加深劳动创造财富和自由主义、个人主义，又加上西部美国农场的建立和逐渐扩大，产生大批牛仔，这些人游荡在各个农场之间，靠给别人照看牛群、驱赶劫匪为生，逐渐财富有所积累，后来买下自己的农场，发了大财，然后大吹自己年轻时候或真或假的事迹，当时的牛仔的装扮并非我们今天熟悉的牛仔装，今天牛仔装是从工厂的咔叽布工作服发展来的

50年代到70年代初的美国人被称为“垮掉的一代”，他们没有什么钱，不出去工作，于是卖不起漂亮光鲜的衣服，于是帆布和咔叽布被广泛采用，这种十分舒适的着装恰好满足人们对“自由”的要求，后来又加上原本军队才有的“附兜”（行军时用来装打火机的口袋），恰好装下并卡住zippo打火机，（注，当时的zippo还是属于低价货）这就是今天广为流行的牛仔装的来源，也就是说牛仔装根牛仔文化没关系，倒是与“happys”关系极大
